The rankings machine,
from the inside.

Submission portals and methodology engines for ranking and intelligence organizations. Benchmarking platforms for the institutions they measure. Built by people who ran this plumbing for years, on the side of the table that receives.

Fig. RNK.2Both sides of the table

Two chairs, the same headache.

Ranking seasons hurt on both sides of the table, differently, but for the same underlying reason. We’ve sat in both chairs:

Eight hundred institutions submit by spreadsheet. Three analysts validate by eye.

the ranker

Results day is a surprise party nobody enjoys.

the ranked

The methodology lives in one brilliant analyst’s Excel file. She’s on leave.

the ranker

You learn what moved your rank from a journalist’s phone call.

the ranked

Every appeal season, the audit trail is an email archaeology dig.

the ranker

Almost nobody has worked both chairs. We have, and that vantage is exactly what this course sells.

Fig. RNK.3The machine room

A ranking season, operator’s view.

This is what happens to a submission after an institution presses send: the room most universities never see. We spent years building and running rooms like it.

Season: submission to publicationIn operation
01

The call opens

Portal live, definitions published, deadlines visible. Institutions know exactly what’s being asked, in what shape.

02

Submissions arrive

Validated at entry, not after: bad data bounces at the door with a reason, while the submitter is still at the keyboard.

03

Anomalies flagged

A 300% jump in publications earns a polite, automatic question. Outliers are queried while there’s time to fix them.

04

The methodology runs

Weights, normalization, scenarios: versioned and reproducible, so this year’s number can be defended next year.

05

Results & appeals

Every figure traceable to the submission it came from. The audit trail isn’t a folder: it’s the system itself.

06

Publication

League tables, profiles, and embargoes served under control, not emailed and prayed over.

Seasons operatedMany, under NDA

Audit trailThe system itself

We didn’t study this pipeline. We built and operated it, season after season, for the organizations institutions answer to.

Fig. RNK.4The modules

One course, two streams.

The same machinery, sold from either side of the table:

Stream A

RNK 551

Submission portals

Collect from hundreds of institutions without drowning: validation at entry, progress dashboards, reminders that send themselves.

Clean data at the door

RNK 552

Methodology engines

Weights, normalization, and scenario runs: versioned, reproducible, and defensible when the appeals arrive.

A defensible number

RNK 553

Results & publication

League tables, institution profiles, embargo management, and appeal workflows: served from the system, traceable to source.

Benchmarking platforms

Your position against peers you choose, on definitions you can see, before someone else’s definitions decide it for you.

Your position, on your terms

RNK 555

Rankings-readiness

Submission data assembled from the registry, validated against each ranking body’s rules, and rehearsed before the portal ever opens.

No more season scramble

Fig. RNK.5Entry requirements

Not every organization needs this yet.

The honest admissions policy, from people with no interest in selling rankings theatre:

Wait a semester when

  • You don’t submit to rankings and honestly don’t plan to: that’s allowed
  • One ranking, one season: a good spreadsheet and a calendar still cope
  • You want a better rank without a strategy: platforms measure, they don’t improve
  • Your dataset is small and your current tooling is honest about it

Enrol now when

  • Every season is a scramble that eats your best people
  • You can’t explain your own movement, up or down
  • Benchmarking currently means screenshots of competitors’ websites
  • Submissions have outgrown spreadsheets, on either side of the table

And a submission is only ever as good as the registry behind it.Start with Institutional Data Management

A season, put on rails.

Phased around your calendar, because in this field, the deadline is the deadline.

Weeks 1–3

01Orientation

Your chair, your season, your systems: submissions, definitions, deadlines, and where last cycle actually hurt, mapped.

A map of your season

Weeks 3–8

02Foundations

Sources connected and definitions encoded: the registry work that makes every later number traceable.

Data that can be defended

03The platform

Portal, engine, or benchmarking build: your stream’s machinery, live and loaded with real data.

04The live run

A real cycle through the system, side by side with the old way: validated, queried, scored, and published on rails.

05Season standing

Methodology changes, new indicators, new peers: absorbed as configuration. Next season starts ready.

Questions, answered straight.

Can you name the ranking organizations you’ve worked with?

Not publicly: discretion is a working condition in this industry, and we honour it. What we can say: technology vendor to a global university-rankings organization, and long-term partner to a regional higher-ed intelligence company. References can be arranged under NDA where appropriate.

We’re an institution. Will this improve our rank?

Honestly: no platform improves an institution; teaching, research, and outcomes do that. What the platform does is make your position visible, your submissions accurate, and your effort aimed where movement is actually possible. Anyone selling guaranteed rank improvements is selling weather.

We’re a ranking body. Can you handle our scale and confidentiality?

That’s the environment we come from: hundreds of submitting institutions, embargoed results, isolated datasets, and audit trails built for appeal season. Scale and discretion aren’t features we added: they’re the default conditions we learned to build in.

Where does benchmarking data come from: is it fair game?

Public and published sources, datasets you license, and your own submissions, with provenance labelled on every figure. No scraping of private data, no grey sources. In this field, a number you can’t source is a number you can’t use.

Can you help with just one season?

Yes. Season-support engagements exist for exactly that: assemble, validate, and rehearse one submission cycle. Plenty of them turn into standing platforms afterwards, but that’s your call to make after results day, not before.

How is it priced?

Fixed quotes per stage, calendar-aware, because in this field the deadline moves for nobody. Documentation comes committee-ready for institutions and board-ready for ranking organizations.

Whichever chair you sit in, we’ve sat in it.

Ranking body or ranked institution: bring your season. One conversation to map it, and a plan to put the next one on rails. Discretion guaranteed; it’s the industry we come from.
